Alternatives to the Boiler Scrappage Scheme
There are alternatives to the Boiler Scrappage Scheme that you may be eligible for, such as The Warm Front Scheme is designed to help insulate your home and optimise efficiency, and the Low Carbon Buildings Programme which is available to support microgeneration projects.
Even if you don’t qualify for Government backed funding, it’s well worth considering upgrading your old boiler anyway.
New boilers are over 90% efficient so they use less fuel, produce lower CO2 emissions and could save you up to £235* every year on your heating bills.
You may also find that a high efficiency boiler gives you a warmer home and more hot water, especially if you’ve had your existing system for more than 11 years, have installed a power shower or increased the number of bathrooms in your house.

About the Boiler Scrappage Scheme
Surprisingly domestic heating systems generate 14% of the UK’s CO2 emissions, so it’s vital that we switch to more energy efficient technology to protect the environment. The Government is offering up to 125,000 households the opportunity to save money on replacing their old G-rated boiler with a new high efficiency A-rated model, making this the perfect time to update your heating system and potentially reduce your bills by up to 40%.
The Energy Saving Trust is responsible for the administration of the scheme, and householders and landlords who privately own and rent dwellings in England are eligible to apply.
Seven steps to claiming the offer
- Check that your boiler is listed as G-rated (or worse)
- Choose a replacement boiler
- Get a quote from a Gas Safe registered installer
- Apply for a Government voucher worth £400
- Wait for your voucher to arrive before commissioning your new boiler installation
- Pay the installer in full and then redeem your £400 Boiler Scrappage Scheme cashback by sending back a copy of your benchmark certificate and installer invoice, along with £400 voucher back to the Energy Saving Trust.

When will the Boiler Scrappage Scheme vouchers be issued?
Boiler Scrappage Scheme vouchers will be issued from the 18th January 2010 onwards and are available on a first come first served basis for up to 125,000 households in the UK.
You should receive the £400 voucher approximately ten days after application. They are valid for 12 weeks from date of issue and must be redeemed within this time or they will be cancelled and reallocated. Only one voucher per household is available, but if your voucher expires you can apply for another one if funds are available.
